Survey: More Young Adults, High Schoolers Using E-Cigarettes Than Adults

NEW YORK STATE -- The state's 2014 youth and adult tobacco surveys show e-cigarette usage in high school students and young adults is nearly double that of adults. E-cigarettes, or electronic nicotine delivery systems, are products that deliver nicotine, flavor, and other chemicals through a battery-powered device.

There's also little evidence teens and young adults are using this as a substitute for regular cigarettes. The survey shows more than half of high school aged users as well as the 18 to 24 crowd are smoking both cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

Use of e-cigarettes in public indoor places designated as 'smoke-free' is illegal in Buffalo and Erie County.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, e-cigarettes have not been fully studied yet and little is known about the liquids being inhaled. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say nicotine exposure at younger ages could open up the door to sustained tobacco use and cause harm to the brain.
