Health Ministry: E-cigarettes with excessive nicotine can kill

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry warns that the practice of smoking electronic cigarettes or vapes with excessive nicotine content can cause immediate death.

Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this was based on the latest scientific studies conducted by the National Poison Centre at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), which revealed that 40mg of nicotine, contained in 10ml of vape liquids, can instantly kill an adult human being.

Speaking to reporters after Ops Typhoid here in Kuala Lumpur, he said vaping might also lead to addiction and deadly diseases such as lung cancer, apart from the other side effects of nicotine.

Under the Poisons Act, nicotine is classified under category C, which can only be sold or supplied as a medicine or an ingredient in medicine by a registered medical practitioner. - Bernama

'It was only intended to be a second income': E-cig retailer tells how the business he started in his living room now turns over £1million a year

Three years ago, Allan Barclay set up a new business in his living room designed to be a second income.

Today, that same business has an annual turnover of over £1 million. And even Allan is taken aback by the speed of his company's growth. His lightbulb moment came after buying his wife Laura an e-cigarette in an attempt to persuade her to give up her long-standing smoking habit. The Aberdeen-based businessman recalled: “In late 2012, when the first generation of e-cigarettes were popping up, I bought one for my good lady who was quite a decent smoker shall we say.

“Over the years we’d tried everything to try and get her to stop smoking.

“The idea for the business was based on her reaction. I thought, ‘These things might actually work’.

“She said it was the closest anything had come to smoking a real cigarette. She got the satisfaction of the inhale and the exhale and the nip at the back of the throat which you crave and you miss as a smoker.”
Allan was a senior manager at the time for a well-known grocery chain. But he saw an opportunity he didn’t want to miss out on.

“It was one of those moments in life – I was mid-forties, and I thought, ‘If I don’t do something about this now I’ll be forever working for someone else.’

“Ecigs-scotland.com was born a on a computer in my living room. It was only ever intended to be a small second income. How things have changed.Allan registered the domain name and contacted a couple of the major suppliers to ask if he could sell their products.

“One saw the value in what I was going to do and they agreed to supply me on a wholesale basis,” he added.

“Initially the plan was to be a small online business. I put the products on the website and started from there.

“The growth of the business has been nothing short of meteoric. Even beyond my wildest expectations. The fact that within two and a half years we went from a standing start of zero to a turnover in excess of one million pounds per annum is pretty good going in anybody’s books.”Ecigs-Scotland now have a shop in Aberdeen market, Schoolhill, Peterhead, and a Franchise in Nairn, with plans to open another store in Elgin.

Public Health England recently published a review that found e-cigarettes to be 95 per cent less harmful than tobacco cigarettes. But a new EU tobacco directive looks set to include nicotine-based vaping products, restricting sizes of bottles of e-liquids, nicotine strengths, advertising and sponsorship, and the sale of refillable products which account for half of the British e-cigs market. It has caused concern among e-cigarette producers and retailers that the planned legislation will damage the emerging industry and see it facing tougher regulations than some tobacco products – a fear that Allan shares.

He said: “The impending EU legislation is the biggest threat to the e-cigarette industry.

“The legislators are finding it hard to categorise where e-cigarettes fit in the spectrum. They’re not tobacco products and they’re not a medicinal product; they need their own classification.”

Allan’s wife and three children now also work for the business. And the family are not only celebrating the astonishing growth of the company, but their own personal success story.

“My wife is a different woman since quitting cigarettes three years ago,” said Allan.

“She started off on a fairly strong nicotine level and it gave her that bite at the back of the throat she was looking for, but she’s reduced the nicotine content in the liquid now down to a very, very low content.

“Laura liked smoking, like a lot of people, so this has been a godsend for her, and for many others.”

Meet The Classically Trained Artist Making Pieces You Can Smoke Out Of

Are you from Kansas City originally? I grew up in St. Louis, but my mom moved out to Colorado while I was in high school, so I spent a ton of time there. I chose Kansas City for its ceramics department. There's a really rich history of ceramics here that got me interested into making these subversive vessels.
What is Kansas City weed culture like? It's really strange. The city has West coast and East coast vibes. There's a big range. You have the Greek Life people who have gone to colleges around here and now live in Kansas City. They're frat guys, smoker bros. There's also a large hippie culture: people who go to music festivals and and go to see Grateful Dead cover bands. Then there are people who aren't involved in the culture really, but still use. There's a lot of people who smoke hash oil. The head shops carry a lot of specialized gear for smoking concentrates.

How has head shop culture influenced you? As a millennial, bongs were just part of being a teenager. But spending time in Colorado, it was a culture I was exposed to quite a bit. Head shop culture was always funny to me, like there'd be high-end glass pipes that will run for 10 grand—it's just insane. Now, I have the opportunity to use it as an influence and make fun of it in a way. A lot of my source imagery comes from visiting different head shops and seeing these hilarious pieces that are actually being produced and sold that are completely genuine. I'm mocking it, but it's also where I derive a lot of inspiration from.

How did you start making bongs? I just graduated a few years ago from the Art Institute, and I got a degree in art history and ceramics. I've been working with clay since 2009. Being in an institution setting, you're typically not allowed to make bongs or ashtrays. After I graduated, it was kind of fun to start making things I couldn't get away with in school. I started making these bongs with the intention of them only really existing as art objects. I try to make the wackiest, craziest bongs that I can think of so people are like, 'What the fuck is this?' I worked in Maine for a while at a ceramic art residency in the woods and was digging this beautiful red clay from the ground with my hands. At that point I was like, "I'm living in the woods and I want to smoke weed out of these things." So I did.

What's the purpose of a non-functional bong? I started off making as many bongs as I could. While some were purely art objects and didn't work intentionally, some I just couldn't make work. I made this Alf bong where the nostrils are two bowls, and it had this really intricate interior system of chambers and bubblers. It was a complete failure. For some people, it's meaningful for an object to operate the way it's meant to, but some appreciate the object just as an object. I've been focusing on functional bongs more lately because I feel like that's just kind of what people want. I want make things that exist as more than just an object. That utility is what brings them to life.

Glass Artist of the Month: Wicked Water Works

Brian and Rebecca Peterson, also known as “Wicked” and “Mrs. Wicked,” are owners of Wicked Water Works. They met in 2003 in an art chat room and became quick friends. Drawn together by their love of art, they began dating in 2004 and married in 2005.
Amazingly, Wicked only started blowing glass as a hobby in 2005. But it became his obsession within a year, and he turned full-time to the torch as admiration for his work grew. His passion has produced spectacular pieces, ranging from blood and gore to coral reef pieces. Wicked is completely self-taught, but he views that as an advantage: “I think I’ve conceived a few glassblowing techniques never seen in the industry before.”
The other half of the Wicked duo started her career alongside her husband in 2009, working as his apprentice. Wicked sales were skyrocketing and Mrs. Wicked quickly mastered the craft, and her own unique style of sculpting glass art evolved. She says simply: “I enjoy creating beauty out of glass, from flowers to coral.”
Since then, the Wicked husband/wife team has consistently challenged themselves. Although their signature production line remains their popular calling card, their passion lies with high-end glass. “We love that functional glass pipes are proudly displayed as art by buyers, ignoring the stigma that some people associate with smoking,” says. Mr. Wicked.

Reuters: Electronic Cigarette Use Soars in 2015 Poll suggests majority of vapers still using tobacco

NEW YORK -- An online Reuters/Ipsos poll of 5,679 Americans suggests electronic-cigarette usage is significantly higher than government estimates. The survey, conducted between May 19 and June 4, 2015, shows nearly 10% of adults (and 15% of adults under 40) now vape. That’s nearly four times the 2.6% figure the U.S. government estimated in 2013.The difference might be a result of the significant increase in vaping over the past two years: the Reuters poll showed almost 70% of vapers started within the last year.

“The surge in use comes as conventional cigarette smoking has declined in the United States to about 19% of adults,” reported Reuters.Indeed, health and smoking cessation seemed to be at the center of why survey respondents supported vaping: almost half of the vapers surveyed said they were motivated to switch by friends and family, and 40% listed the ability to smoke indoors and lower cost compared to cigarettes as reasons. Approximately 80% of vapers said e-cigs were “a good way to help people quit smoking,” as opposed to less than 40% of non-vapers polled.

The vapers polled were twice as likely as non-vapers to describe e-cigs as “healthier than the traditional cigarettes,” but also more likely to believe that individuals could become “addicted to e-smoking.”Despite listing health benefits or savings as a reason to start vaping, approximately 75% of vapers polled still smoke combustible cigarettes.

Although the Reuters data may not support e-cigs as a cessation device, vaping products could threaten sales of more traditional nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) such as nicotine patches and gum. According to the research group Euromonitor, U.S. NRT sales rose 0.2% to $900 million in 2014—but Euromonitor said it expects NRT sales to drop this year due in part to the increased use of e-cigarettes.

Cut! Poldark star's e-cig habit brings filming to a halt as crew 'get annoyed with constant vaping'

From his hat to his breeches, Aidan Turner looks the epitome of the 18th century country gent as he returns to his role as Captain Ross Poldark.
Until, that is, you notice one prop that isn’t exactly befitting a Cornish squire – a large e-cigarette glued to his hand.
Turner’s obsession with the ‘vaping’ machine has apparently disrupted filming for the second series of the BBC period drama after it wound up in shots supposed to portray 1790s England.
The leading man’s failure to part with the device is said to have irked his castmates – and a crew member has now been tasked with ensuring it is not in his hand or poking out of his pocket when cameras roll.
Even fans who have flocked to Cornwall for a glimpse of the 32-year-old heartthrob have not failed to notice his fixation with vaping, a habit often adopted by those trying to give up traditional cigarettes.
One onlooker said: ‘Aidan Turner has been using this big vaping device on set. On several occasions when they’ve said “action” he’s still had this thing in his hand.
'He’s puffing on it constantly. He’s never got it out of his mouth.
'It seems to have annoyed everyone. He’s playing the lead actor in a drama set in the 18th century… It looks a bit stupid.
‘Even when people are trying to do his make-up and get him ready he’s puffing on this thing. One time we even saw him discreetly puff the smoke out of his nose as he walked into shot.

Cigirex Electronic Cigarettes

On my quest for the perfect electronic cigarette, I've tried a couple different brands, to-date. Most of them have been the disposable e-cigs. Disposable e-cigs are what many new to electronic smoking (referred to as "vaping") start out with, often graduating to more sophisticated e-cig gear like atomizers and custom e-cig "juice" mixes (juice refers to the concoction of flavorings or nicotine and flavorings made by advanced vapers or pre-made by e-cig companies). My latest disposable e-cig experiment is Cigirex. The company sent samples of both its regular, light, and menthol e-cigs. There are features to like about Cigirex, but unfortunately, it's my least favorite disposable e-cig I've tried so far.

Cigirex Specifics
As a company, Cigirex has praise-worthy goals when it comes to its e-cigs. First, the company uses vegetable glycerin instead of the more controversial propylene glycol used in some other e-cig brands.

Representatives for the company also claim that Cigirex is the first e-cig company to use real liquid nicotine from tobacco extract and the first to successfully launch a patented 100 percent leak-resistant product for its refillable products.

The disposables come in an assortment of nicotine levels and flavors. You can get Black Ops which has the highest level of nicotine at 18 mgs (1.8 percent); Regular at 16 mgs (1.6 percent); Menthol (also at 16 mgs); Light (11 mgs); and Nicotine-Free (made from Green Tea extract).

Each disposable is priced at $11.95 (but you can get a pack of 10 for $9.95 each). The ingredients for the Regular flavor are listed as nicotine, water, vegetable glycerin, and flavors.

The Cigirex Experience

I noticed something right away as I took my first vape of a Cigirex: This e-cig is the closest among e-cigs I've tested that feels like a real cigarette. It's fairly soft— you can almost squeeze it. The white "paper" tube and filter are all colored the same as a traditional e-cig. When you vape, even the tip glows orange, instead of the blue of Blu and Logic e-cigs.

From a distance, it can be hard to tell that this is not a real cigarette. Cigirex does a superior job of making its disposable e-cig feel authentic, even better than Njoy—a company which is building its entire e-cig brand around the fact that its e-cigs are designed to have an authentic feel. If an e-cig's "feel" as a traditional cigarette is important to you, that fact alone may be enough for you to try Cigirex.

However, Cigirex fell short for me in a few ways. First, I found the taste of the Regular flavor least enjoyable among other e-cigs I've tested. It's very chemical-tasting and actually gave me a round of hiccups! I did like the Menthol flavor better (ironic, because I've always detested traditional Menthol cigarettes), but I did not care for Cigirex's Menthol flavor as much as Logic's Menthol option.

Vaping produced a nice plume upon exhale, and the back-of-the-throat hit was sufficient—not quite as powerful as hits from Blu and Logic e-cigs, but satisfying enough.

My biggest issue with Cigirex is that it hardly lasted four hours! Now, I do tend to vape heavy. I can suck an e-cig dry faster than most. However, I felt that for the vendor's claim that the e-cig is good for "over 500 puffs," "approximately 42 cigarettes" (which is over two packs), is an exaggeration. Especially considering the price: At almost $12.00 per single disposable e-cig, that is near the price of a pack of real cigarettes (in New York City, at least).

Cigirex Potential

Overall, I was not impressed with the Cigirex disposables. I did not enjoy the taste and the e-juice went dry too quickly. Still, I am interested in trying their battery-powered e-cigs. The company is taking its products in a notable direction by being particular about the glycerin and I admire the design of the disposable e-cig. A longer-lasting battery and perhaps trying to get used to the Menthol flavor could perhaps convert me into a Cigirex fan. The disposable however, earns two and a half out of five stars for electronic cigarettes.
