E-cigarettes, cigars, hookah now banned for Iowans under 18

DES MOINES, Iowa —Government health officials hope new rules going into effect Monday will keep more tobacco products out of the hands of children.

The ban for those under age 18 focuses on e-cigarettes, cigars, and hookah.  They will all now be regulated just like cigarettes.

Recent studies showed the use of e-cigarettes had tripled among teens.

As KCCI told you in May, the number of electronic cigarette-related calls to the Iowa Poison Control Center has nearly doubled in the last two years. More than half of those calls are cases involving children under the age of 5.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the regulations in May.  E-cigarette devices introduced before the regulations started will be be sold for up to three years while companies apply and await regulatory review.
